How the Character & Word Counter works

The tool takes the text you type or paste into the field and calculates five metrics in real time. Nothing is sent to a server — the computation happens directly in your browser on every keystroke.

A character is counted as the browser sees it (Unicode). For ordinary Latin letters and accented characters, the count matches what you would tally by hand. Note: some emoji and special symbols are made of multiple code units, so they may occasionally count as two characters.

How to use the Character & Word Counter

  1. Click into the text field and paste or type your text.
  2. The counts update instantly — there is no button to press and nothing to confirm.
  3. Watch the tiles: characters, characters without spaces, words, sentences and paragraphs.
  4. Edit the text and the numbers recalculate in real time.

Example input and result for the short text “Hello world. How are you?”:

Because the entire calculation runs in your browser, you can safely paste even sensitive or unpublished text — the data never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.

FAQ

Does the tool count spaces as characters?

Yes. The "characters" tile includes spaces, tabs and line breaks. If you need the length without spaces, watch the "characters without spaces" tile.

How does the tool recognise a word?

It treats every continuous group of non-space characters separated by a space as a word. Two words joined by a hyphen (e.g. "blue-white") therefore count as one word.

How are sentences counted?

A sentence is a segment ending with a period, question mark or exclamation mark. With abbreviations that contain a period (e.g. "etc.") or decimal numbers, the result may be slightly overstated — it is an approximate count.

Does counting work with accented characters?

Yes. Accented letters (á, č, ř, ž, é…) count as a single character, just like ordinary letters.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All computation happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. The text never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.

How are paragraphs counted?

A blank line is treated as the paragraph separator. Two blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines count as two paragraphs.

Is there a limit on the text length?

Practically no — you are only limited by your browser's performance. Ordinary documents and long texts of tens of thousands of words are handled without trouble.

Can I use the counter to keep within the meta description limit?

Yes. Watch the "characters" tile and keep the meta description to roughly 160 characters so search engines don't truncate it. This is a recommendation, not a hard rule.
